M.Tech in Computer Integrated Manufacturing
M.Tech in Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) was started in the year 2005 in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The program is approved by AICTE, Government of Karnataka and is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka. The program aims to integrate total manufacturing enterprise by using integrated systems and data communication. It encompasses CAD/CAM, Flexible Manufacturing (FMS), Computer Aided Process Planning (CAPP) and scheduling. CIM with an integration of both hardware and software realizes real-time process simulation and Computer Numerically Controlled manufacturing.
The program mainly focuses on Optimization of manufacturing processes using System Simulation, FEA, Automation through Hydraulic and Pneumatic Control Systems and Robotics, Advanced Sensors such as MEMS used for Automation, Artificial Intelligence, Optimization Techniques, etc. Students have access to Industry – RVCE collaborative lab (Centre of Excellence for Industrial Automation) set up with Bosch Rexroth, on Hydraulic and Pnuematic Control Systems in the department. Students can work in the areas of design of nanosensors and MEMS in association with the on-going research projects of the faculty members sponsored by agencies such as DRDO laboratories, ISRO, AICTE, DST and other agencies.
Eligibility: Candidates who have acquired BE/B.Tech or equivalent degree in Mechanical Engineering/ Industrial Engineering and Management/Industrial Production Engineering/ Automobile Engineering/ Manufacturing Engineering by securing not less than 50% marks in aggregate. However in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/Group 1 aggregate percent of marks in qualifying examination should not be less than 45%. The admissions are through central counseling on the basis of merit in PGCET or GATE. A few seats are also available under sponsored and Management quota. GATE qualified candidates are eligible for scholarship through AICTE.
Infrastructure: Students get an opportunity to work in various laboratories on advanced software and instruments. Some of the laboratories are:
Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) Laboratory.
Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) Laboratory (ANSYS, LS-Dyna, Abacus)
Computer Aided Design (CAD) Laboratory (Pro-E).
Hydraulic and Pneumatic Control Systems Laboratory.
Areas of research: There are ample opportunities to get involved in projects listed below but not restricted to:
Simulation and Modeling of Manufacturing Systems, Process Automation, Automation of Manufacturing Systems, Design and Analysis of Sensors for Automation, Computer Aided Process Planning, Tooling Design for Manufacturing Processes, Integration of CAD / CAM
Design of On-line Inspection Systems, Design of Product Data Management Systems
Placement Opportunities: Students have placement and internship opportunities in GE Healthcare, Ingersoll-Rand, Kennametal Widma Machine Tools, Hycom Engineering, Ace Designers, Robert Bosch, Toyota, etc.
