Government has decided to grant Rs 1 crore to the University of Oxford, England, to establish a chair in Anthropology of India in the memory of distinguished sociologist MN Srinivas.

In a letter to chief minister Siddaramaiah, varsity vice-chancellor Andrew Hamilton sought a matching grant from Karnataka to take up the project to endow the MN Srinivas Professorship in Anthropology. Soon after receiving Hamilton's letter, the government constituted a committee of expert sociologists headed by former vice-chancellor of Karnataka Women's University Geetha Bali. Sources said that in its report to the CM, the committee recommended the government start the chair jointly with the University of Oxford and asked the department of higher education to decide the academic content, among other things.

Srinivas, who was from from Mysuru, went to Oxford in the late 1940s to pursue doctoral studies and his supervisor was Evans-Pritchard, who created a lecturership in anthrology in South Asia for him. Srinivas contributed to key sociological concepts like vote bank and dominant caste which are commonly used these days in sociological and political studies.
