M.Tech in Environmental Engineering

The Environmental Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering is one of the oldest and well recognized academic programmes in environmental management in the country and abroad. As the environmental issues are becoming multi-disciplinary, the departments  is linked by other departments like Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Facility for Ecological and Analytical Testing (FEAT) etc.

This department has given environmental engineers who are now leading professionals in water treatment and pollution control. Several sponsored and consulting projects in areas like health-based air quality index, atmospheric dispersion of pollutants, air pollution monitoring and control, drinking water supply, heavy metal pollution, industrial waste treatment, biological processes, biosorption, virology, environmental systems modelling, and softwares have been completed.

Recognizing the challenges for environmentally sustainable economic development, the Institute launched a new, unique and broad-based programme in Environmental Engineering and Management. This was primarily to meet the growing human resource requirements of high quality to provide leadership in various sectors. These sectors are: policy and planning, implementation and legal aspects, sustainable industrial development, environment-friendly infrastructure management, resource cleanup through remediation of land, water and air resources, over and above the traditional 'end of pipe' pollution control measures.

This interdisciplinary stream is designed to meet the needs of both government departments/public sector and industry, with emphasis on various aspects like protected water supply and sanitation for public health, pollution control and sustainable development. The topics to be covered include protected water supply, waste water management, air pollution control, solid waste management, ground water pollution-fate, transport and remediation, environmental planning and impact assessment, modelling of air and water quality, environmental chemistry, environmental microbiology biotechnology and environmental systems analysis.

Job Prospectus:

Environmental engineering has immense scope in India for professionals who are qualified in chemical, biological, thermal, radioactive or even mechanical engineering as environmental engineering is a diverse field and requires people from diverse background. Moreover, professionals from process engineering, environmental chemistry, water and sewage treatment, waste reduction management, pollution prevention, etc are required in large numbers.

Job prospects for professionals with qualification in environmental engineering are bright in research centres, NGOs and various governmental departments working towards green development. Candidates with M.Tech in environmental engineering have opportunities to work for government built assessment committees which study and analyse the environmental risks involved in certain projects. The report of such a committee is then submitted to the concerned authority for further observation. Scholars with PhD in environmental engineering can opt for teaching jobs in colleges and universities.
