M.Tech in Highway Technology


The course was started considering the shortage of technically sound practicing highway and traffic engineers who also have field exposure. The curriculum concentrates on techniques of planning and design of roads, bridges and drainage based on traffic and ecological studies. The student is also exposed to construction & management of highways, pavements , preventive and remedial measures of pavement failures, newer technologies in Highway design as well as laying. The students are well trained in traffic and transportation subjects also to supplement the course. They are exposed to special problems in road construction with the application of modern construction equipments. It is well balanced program to suit the present and future requirements of infrastructure development based on 12th plan of Government of India.

Periodically students are taken to the field to understand the practical problems and keep them abreast of latest technologies in construction practice.

Eligibility: Candidates who have acquired BE/B.Tech/AMIE degree in Civil Engineering/ Transportation Engineering by securing not less than 50% marks in aggregate. However in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/Group 1 aggregate percent of marks in qualifying examination should not be less than 45%. The admissions are through central counseling on the basis of merit in PGCET or GATE. GATE qualified candidates are eligible for scholarship through AICTE. Few seats are also available for sponsored and Management candidates.

Infrastructure: The Infrastructure for the above course includes Highway materials testing laboratory, Soil mechanics and concrete laboratories.

Areas of Research: Noise pollution and noise contour, Development of vehicular speed and speed contour, pedestrian safety and modeling, highway materials, preventive and remedial measures of pavement failures, Road Safety Index development, urban transport- issues and challenges.

Placement Opportunities: The students have opportunities in infrastructure companies like, ICRA Ltd., RITES, STUP, SPAN consultants, Consulting civil engineers, L&T ECC, IBM, Louis Berger and many more.
